Haiti 2010 Earthquake Response

Haiti in desperate need of physical therapists

Over the past two weeks, physicians and surgeons have been streaming into Haiti to treat the thousands of blunt force injuries caused by a massive earthquake.  Now, medical teams are faced with an acute shortage of physical therapists to provide the follow-up care that patients need so that their limbs can function properly again.

Even before the earthquake, Haiti lacked physical therapists.  The medical infrastructure was barely adequate to meet primary health needs.  There is no national health care system and people are too poor to afford privately run medical care.

Project Hope is asking physical therapists and other health professionals to fill out an application for its database of available volunteers.  Other humanitarian organizations that occasionally recruit physical therapists include Handicap International (application) and CBM (vacancies).
